Thinking about creating a rain garden? Planning a landscaping or paving project? Wondering what you can do help control storm water and pollution that flows into Diamond Lake and ultimately, the Mississippi River?

Make your project one that incorporates best storm water management practices and receive a cost share grant from the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD). The Minnehaha Creek Watershed District has a unique grant program that may cover as much as 50% of the cost of your project up to $2500.

To learn more about the grant program go to the MCWD website. Don’t miss this great opportunity to improve your yard and water quality and have the watershed help pay the cost. Applications are due by June 30, 2014 but it is not too soon to plan your project and submit your grant request.

Learn industry best management practices (BMPs) for turf and lawn care through this 4-1/2 hour workshop.

Topics include:
• Impacts of turf management on local water resources
• Proper equipment calibration
• Selection and application of fertilizers
• Mowing techniques
• Pesticide application tips
• Legal issues and additional resources

You will walk away with helpful in-the-field materials you can use to maximize your summer maintenance regimen, such as a turf care matrix. Participants may also take a voluntary test for a Level 1 Certification: Summer Turf Care Best Practices certification by the MPCA. You must pass the test to be certified. Brenda Danner, from the Minneapolis Park Board, will lead this frog identification class. She plans to talk about frog species in the area and their characteristic calls. We will also discuss the results from the 2013 frog survey that Friends of Diamond Lake volunteers conducted around the lake.

Everyone is welcome for an interesting discussion about these fascinating creatures that can tell us much about the health of Diamond Lake. Also, if you plan to participate in this year’s survey and have an iPhone, bring it to the meeting and we will set you up to enter frog data using your phone.
